About our founder, Jerusa Kamala MD
Karibuni! Welcome. My name is Jerusa Kamala. I am an Obstetrics/Gynecology medical specialist, recently retired from Unity Point Health in Des Moines, Iowa. As a child growing up in Bukoba, Tanzania, I have seen first-hand the devastation of inadequate healthcare in East Africa. As a small child, a missionary encouraged me to follow my dreams. Those dreams led me to the U.S., where I completed my medical degree at the Howard University College of Medicine and my residencies at Wilmington Medical Center in Delaware (pediatrics) and St. Joseph's Hospital in Maryland (OB/GYN).
For many years I have dreamed of starting a nonprofit that would help those medically underserved. In 2011, my dream became reality with the establishment of Total Health Africa (THA). With the help of my husband, THA Board Members, community partners and many others along the way, we are providing hope and healing to many Tanzanians.
